Project Overview
The £73 million award-winning Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP) was delivered over a 5-year period and supported Stockport’s ambitious regeneration and growth plans by providing an improved infrastructure network.
Wilde Consultants worked in partnership with Stockport MBC to support all stages of the delivery by providing an extensive range of professional services to support the development of the outline business case, scheme design, construction delivery and operational handover.
The TCAP programme consisted in excess of 50 projects, including improvements to roads and junctions, public realm projects, new and enhanced cycling and walking routes and new accesses for future residential and commercial development sites.

The provision of consultancy services to deliver scheme designs. Notable projects include:
St. Marys Way road widening, retaining walls and bridges
A £15 million corridor improvement to improve capacity by widening the existing carriageway, junction improvements, and enhanced walking / cycling facilities to reduce congestion around the town centre.
Redrock public realm improvements
A new £12 million high-quality public realm space as part of new retail and leisure developments in the main retail street in the town centre.
Merseyway town centre public realm improvements
A high-quality public realm enhancement within the heart of Stockport’s town centre retail area.
Stockport Interchange access road (Astley Street)
The realignment of Astley Street and Chestergate to link into a new road bridge over the river Mersey to facilitate public transport access to the new public transportation interchange.
M60 Junction 1 access widening and retaining walls
Junction widening, retaining walls and signalisation of the roundabout to provide two dedicated traffic lanes for access to the M60 motorway network.
Travis Brow to A6 link road
A new £15 million dual carriageway to reduce congestion and enhance town centre connections with the M60 motorway network. Travis Brow Link Road aligned fully with the TCAP vision of transforming transport networks in Stockport town centre by not only improving roads and junctions but also providing better access by enhancing cycling and walking routes
Described as “probably the single most important new strategic highway connection in Stockport”, the Travis Brow to A6 Link Road is an outstanding example of a project that demonstrates a contribution to the mobility of the community.
The project included the provision of a new dual-lane single-carriageway and cycleway, which required works beneath three spans of the historic Stockport Viaduct. The innovative construction methodology helped mitigate any impacts on the Victorian railway viaduct, which supports the busy Westcoast Mainline
Aroura Business Park access road
A new £2.4 million junction and access road to a new industrial park on a brownfield site.
Goyt Valley eastern cycling links
A £2.5 million improvement and development of new off-highway cycling and walking routes to provide safe and sustainable transport links between the town centre and the east of the borough.
Brighton Road retail access road
A £1 million priority junction and access road to the development of the largest Mercedes dealership in the UK.
