Stockport Town Centre Access Plan – Major transport scheme to tackle congestion.

Main Services:
- Design and site management services to Stockport Council.
- Working with Stockport Council’s staff and other “Strategic Alliance” partners to deliver junction remodelling and improvements, carriageway widenings, new footbridges, road bridges and retaining walls.
- Four year implementation programme to be completed 2018.
The Stockport Town Centre Access Plan’s (STCAP) objective is to provide an integrated transport investment strategy to tackle congestion and barriers to movement in Stockport town centre to support and enhance the local economy, provide access to jobs, improve community wellbeing and create a vibrant town centre. However, investment in transport is needed to tackle some problems in the town centre, in particular, congestion and barriers to movement between town centre areas, particularly caused by the A6 and M60.
A transformational transport investment plan is therefore needed to tackle these problems and not constrain the significant development proposals for Stockport town centre.
STCAP is a masterplan for transport in Stockport and includes:
- Highway improvements to the east of the town centre along Hempshaw Lane and Higher Hillgate.
- Targeted transport corridor improvements to the west of the town centre along King Street West, Booth Street and Greek Street.
- A new link road between the A6 and Travis Brow.
- A6 corridor enhancements between George’s Road and Bramhall Lane.
- Improved access to Stockport rail and bus stations.
- Improved access to key potential development sites including; Stockport Exchange, Redrock and Gorsey Bank.
- Public realm improvements to Chestergate and Hillgate / Shawcross Street.
- Bus priority improvements.
- New and improved pedestrian and cycle routes.
- Upgraded town centre signing strategy.
The project has been funded by the Government’s Local Growth Fund and is part of Stockport Council’s Investing in Stockport Programme which will see a range of ambitious projects launched across Stockport, aimed at ensuring the town continues to grow and meet the needs of modern day life.
Wilde Consulting Engineers have been working in collaboration with Stockport MBC’s in-house design teams to deliver the current phase of work.
The project is being delivered by a number of local SME’s (small to medium enterprises) including George Cox & Sons and Bethell Construction who are members of the Stockport Strategic Alliance (a framework of specialist contractors and consultants in partnership with the Council’s Design and Project Management teams).
