Retaining wall replacement with mass concrete wall
Client: Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council
Location: Mossley
Main Services:
- Stamford Street retaining wall supports an embankment above the highway. The wall was in a poor condition with areas of localized collapse. The presence of a spring in the embankment above the wall caused water flow onto the highway leading to icing problems in the winter.
- The embankment at the top of the wall was re-profiled to give a reduced retained height allowing the wall to be re-constructed using a mass concrete gravity wall. The existing masonry was re-used as cladding.
- Extensive back of wall drainage was incorporated into the design to control ground water. The back of wall drainage was connected into the highway drainage to mitigate the problem of water on the highway.
