Shady Lane track drainage and pumping station

Client:J Murphy & Sons Location: Timperley, Trafford

Shady Lane is located on the Woodley Junction to the Partington line. In 2010-2011 this line was modified to accommodate larger gauge W10 freight traffic by lowering the track to increase the clearance under the overbridge for the track drainage and pumping station.

This modification created a localised “sump” effect in the line which led to the flooding of this section of the track and the imposition of a temporary speed restriction on the line. Effective drainage was required to prevent flooding and improve the track condition. Due to the elevation of the track and the distance to the nearest outfall, a permanent pumped solution was appropriate.

Wilde Consultants developed the design of the new track drainage system and bespoke pumping station, working collaboratively with the Contractor J Murphy & Sons to provide design support throughout the Network Rail design assurance process. The project was successfully completed in early 2021.”
