Predicting and Evaluating Loads due to Extreme Wind Conditions

Main Services:

  • Wind loading study was performed to British Standard 1991-1-4 on a bowl-type structure of 90m length and 30m maximum height.
  • The unusual shape of the building necessitated use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) because standard formulas for typical shapes were not considered representative.
  • Forces on building due to external wind pressures were calculated under local “once in 50 years” maximum velocity conditions.
  • The analysis predicted where and under what conditions the highest loads would occur, and showed that these loads would not be in excess of expectations for a conventional building under the same circumstances. This provided both Millwood House and their end client with additional confidence in their design.
