Main Services:
- The Park Road retaining wall scheme comprised works to two retaining walls. Wall No.1 retains the highway above the River Tame. The wall was in a poor condition with localized areas of collapse particularly where highway drains were found to discharge through the wall.
- The refurbishment of Wall No. 1 comprised pressure pointing and grouting of the wall followed by the installation of soil nails. The soil nails were installed at a level and inclination designed to ensure that there was no interference with the sewer which runs along Park Road.
- Wall No.2 retains an embankment above the highway. The wall had significant forward rotation and was considered to be close to collapse. Due to the steepness of the retained embankment and the presence of services in the footway gravity type retaining walls were not considered feasible.
- Therefore a contiguous piled wall was used to replace the existing wall, this was clad using reclaimed masonry from the site. In order to ensure the stability of the existing wall and embankment during the installation of the piles an innovative method of installation was adopted by constructing a piling platform comprising of granular fill in front of the wall.
