Main Services:
- Manchester Road retaining wall supports the highway above the River Tame in Mossley. A redundant culvert passed through the wall and under the highway and is thought to have served the former mill race to Scout Mill.
- Due to the proximity of the River Tame both the permanent and temporary works had to be agreed with the Environment Agency and take account of the fish breeding season.
- The retaining wall supports a footway containing services which would have been prohibitive to divert. The proposed works involved localised rebuilds and soil nailing of the wall. The existing parapet was taken down and re-built to provide adequate pedestrian restraint and a timber clad open box beam was installed to prevent accidental wheel loading on the footway. The redundant culvert was infilled to remove all future maintenance liabilities.
- The materials were specified to be sympathetic to the semi-rural environment.
