Adding additional storeys to high-rise tower blocks is a novel and efficient strategy to provide funds for essential remedial works or to increase the value of the property.
Following the Grenfell tower block fire tragedy, the removal of dangerous cladding is a priority. However, this essential cladding replacement can be delayed while funds are sourced. Building additional rooftop floors and creating additional flats presents an exciting opportunity to maximise the potential of existing buildings by further increasing floor space and using the funding to forward finance recladding works or to add value to an existing asset.
Wilde Consulting Engineers have extensive experience designing such works and have analysed many multi-storey buildings of various heights to establish their capability to safely support additional storeys.
A new high-tech office facility was installed on top of the existing five-storey Bill Lyons Informatics Centre (BLIC) building at University College London. Comprised of a lightweight steel frame, and blending seamlessly with existing architecture, this provides a remarkable example of what can be achieved through redeveloping existing buildings.
