Aldwyn Primary School

This single storey expansive new primary school was designed to accommodate two existing schools, being built on the site of one of them. Sustainability featured highly in the Client’s brief, requiring a number of special design features:

• a green roof to attenuate roof run off and give thermal mass and efficiency.
• a buried site attenuation scheme to limit off site drainage discharges.
• widespread use of timber construction.
• hygroscopic partition wall construction to passively control humidity levels.
• single leaf, thermally efficient clay block external masonry.

The architectural vision to create open and airy environment combined with a splayed and curved footprint shape lead to some complexity in the combined timber/steelwork frame to achieve a viable and efficient structural form.
